Banda Ionica

Banda Ionica is a music ensemble from Italy, founded in 1997. The musical focus of Banda Ionica is primarily on the traditional music of Campania, Calabria and Sicily.

Banda Ionica was formed in 1997 by Roy Paci of Sicily and Fabio Barovero (formerly of Mau Mau) of Turin. Today the ensemble comprises twenty Sicilian musicians of various ages, who have all played or still play in marching bands.

The repertoire of Banda Ionica includes funeral march music written between the 19th and early 20th centuries by important and lesser known Italian composers such as Errico Petrella and Amedeo Vella. In addition to elements of the traditional folk music of southern Italy and Sicily, influences of classical, opera music and jazz are reflected in the music of Banda Ionica.

The band has released two albums up to now. Their first album came out in 1998 and was entitled “Passione”. It deals mainly with compositions for Holy Week processions in southern Italy, and with it, Banda Ionica was able to celebrate a huge success both in Italy and abroad.

Their second album “Matri Mia” came out in 2002 and again attracted a great deal of attention nationally as well as internationally. Unlike the purely instrumental and strictly traditional debut album, “Matri Mia” featured vocalists such as the Italian mezzosoprano Cristina Zavalloni. The album included a number of other guest musicians. More modern elements were also incorporated in the production of “Matri Mia”.
