Boom Pam are a band from Tel Aviv, Israel formed in 2003. The band took their name from a song of the same title by Greek-Israeli singer Aris San. The band play a unique mix of Mediterranean-Middle Eastern music paired with rock and surf music as well as elements of klezmer, Balkan and Greek music.
The band were originally founded in 2003 by both guitarists Uri Brauner Kinrot and Uzi Feinerman together with tuba player Yuval “Tuby” Zolotov. Shortly after that, drummer Dudu Kohav joined the band. In their early days, Boom Pam played mostly at weddings and in small clubs in and around Tel Aviv. With their cover version of Aris San’s classic “Boom Pam” together with Israeli rock musician Berry Sakharof, the band hit the charts in Israel in the summer of 2004, gaining national attention. A short while later, internationally renowned Balkan pop DJ and producer Shantel from Frankfurt became aware of the band and invited them to Europe for their first gigs in Berlin, Frankfurt and Cologne. They hit it off right from the start and Shantel offered to help the band produce their first album and release it on his label Essay Recordings. They recorded the album in Frankfurt and following its release, it became a huge success in the international world music scene. The album shot straight to the top ten in the European world music charts in 2006.
In the meantime, Uzi Feinerman and Dudu Kohav left the band. The latter was replaced by drummer Itamar “The Kid” Levi. In 2008, their second album “Puerto Rican Nights” came out, again on Shantel’s Essay Recordings label, followed by an extensive tour throughout North America where they also performed at the Winnipeg Folk Festival and at the Montreal International Jazz Festival. In 2010, their third album “Alakazam” was released, this time on the Tel Aviv label Audio Montage.
From the beginning, Boom Pam have been involved in projects with various artists. They have previously worked with the Batsheva Dance Company, taken part in film music productions and given a concert with the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra. They have also collaborated with the Israeli-American world music band Balkan Beat Box and Israeli musician and multimedia artist Kutiman.
In 2014, Boom Pam’s latest album “Manara and Summer Singles” was released. The album contains the hit single from the video “Ars Meduplam”. Up to now the album has been released only digitally outside Israel and can be purchased through well-known music portals. The song "Ars Meduplam" was 2016 also published on the Compilation "Pandemonium Gitano" by the Swiss Balkanmusic and Gypsypunk DJ Rock Gitano.
Boom Pam are primarily a party band and in spite of the situation in their homeland, emphatically apolitical. On the other hand, the band claim that their sound stands for an idea and the dream of a functioning coexistence of cultures: For Boom Pam, as they see it anyway, play the soundtrack of a dream. In this dream, the peoples of the Middle East live together in peace, the cultures shake hands and Jews and Muslims, Israelis and Palestinians together find a way out of the crisis. “If only people could live together as easily as do influences in music,” said Kohav, “there would be no problems at all.” (Dudu Kohav, Spiegel Online interview, 26 February 2007).
